Most cam sites offer five or more distinct show formats, not just "free" and "private."
A 10-minute private show costs roughly half the price on a freemium site compared to a premium site.
Spy shows let you watch an active private session for roughly one-third the price, but without model interaction.
Understanding the differences between show formats is a must, yet it's rarely explained thoroughly on cam sites. In addition, the vocabulary shifts by platform: spy show, ticket show, exclusive, true private. It's easy to get lost, especially when you're watching cams for the first time.

The Six Show Formats, Explained With Simple Words
Most cam sites have at least six distinct show formats. Each one has a different price point, interaction level, and viewer experience. Confusing one for another is how viewers end up spending more than they planned, or get less than they wanted.
#1 Free Public Rooms: What "Free" Actually Means
On freemium platforms like Chaturbate, Stripchat, and CamSoda, explicit content happens in the public room, funded collectively by the audience tipping. Anyone can watch for free. "Free" describes room access, not the experience of being engaged with a model at no cost. In a room with hundreds of viewers, a small tip is a bid for attention, not a guaranteed response.
On premium platforms like LiveJasmin and Jerkmate, the free room works differently: models cannot be explicit there by platform policy. The free room is a preview and a conversion tool where you connect with a model before moving to a private session.
#2 Goal Shows: Reach The Goal and Watch With Everyone
Goal shows are collective crowdfunded shows: viewers tip toward a token target, and when it's hit, the model performs the stated action for the whole room. Every viewer benefits, whether they contributed or not. A lot of freemium sites include goals as part of the free shows in order to encourage tipping.
#3 Ticket Shows: Pay Once, Watch With Other Contributors
A ticket show is a scheduled performance with a fixed entry price. You buy your ticket before it starts and watch alongside everyone else who bought one.
Like a goal show, nothing is personalized: you're paying for a seat at a show whose content the model decides, not for a private session. That said, viewers often make requests during a ticket show, and if the cam girl is up for it, she may go along with them.
Ticket shows are almost always the cheapest way to access "private" content on a site, especially on premium platforms.
#4 Group Shows: You're Not the Only One Paying
Group shows let multiple viewers watch a live session simultaneously, each paying per-minute. The critical detail most viewers get wrong: you are not splitting the cost. Every viewer pays the full stated per-minute rate at the same time. Group shows are only a genuine bargain if the model's group rate is set meaningfully lower than their private rate, which varies by model and platform.
As with ticket shows, it's up to the model whether she goes along with your requests during the session. She may also ask for an extra tip in exchange, especially in a discounted group show.
#5 Private Shows: The Full Attention Format
A private show is a per-minute billing show, and the model's complete focus directed at you. You can make requests, direct the session, and on most platforms, activate cam2cam so the model can see you too.
"Private" does not automatically mean nobody else is watching. On most platforms, other viewers can pay to observe your session silently, what's called a spy show. If that matters to you, there's a separate format for it, covered in the next section.
Note that if other users are watching your session through a spy show while you're on cam2cam, they won't see your camera.
#6 Spy Shows: Watch Someone's Private Show for Cheap
A spy show lets you watch an active private session between a model and another viewer, at a fraction of the full private rate. You see everything the paying viewer sees. What you cannot do: type in chat, interact with the model, be acknowledged in any way, or control anything about the session. You're invisible to both parties.
The cost discount is significant. On freemium platforms, spy rates typically run around one-quarter to one-third of the private rate. That means if a model's private rate is $5/min, you might spy for under $2/min.
The format exists because it works for everyone. Models benefit from spy viewers stacking on top of their private revenue: it increases the total earnings per private session.
In my privates I'll usually have around 10 spies which makes it more worth it...
On CamSoda and Stripchat, fan club members get free spy access to the subscribed model's private sessions as a perk. If you watch a particular model regularly, joining their fan club before spending on their spy shows can eliminate that cost entirely.
Exclusive Private Shows: True Privacy Without Spies
Standard private shows on most platforms is not genuinely private. Other viewers can pay to watch silently as spy viewers, and unless you specifically select an exclusive show, that's the default.
Exclusive shows are a variation of Private shows that blocks spy access entirely. You are the only viewer. The model cannot have spy revenue stacking on top of your session, which is why models typically charge more for exclusive shows, they're trading spy-viewer income for a higher rate from you.
On most platforms, exclusive shows are not enabled by default. You'll need to enable it when entering a show. On Stripchat for example, exclusive shows are a requirement if you want to enable your own webcam (cam2cam feature).
On Stripchat, you are offered to choose between "Private" and "Exclusive Private" as soon as you click the "Private Show" button.
What It Actually Costs: Real Dollars Across Platforms
The numbers below are platform averages. Model rates can vary a lot within a single cam site.
Platform
Type
Avg. Rate
Chaturbate
Freemium
~$2.15/min
Stripchat
Freemium
~$2.30/min
CamSoda
Freemium
~$2.35/min
BongaCams
Freemium
~$3.88/min
Jerkmate
Premium
~$5.50/min
LiveJasmin
Premium
~$7.20/min
The gap between freemium and premium is not marginal. A 10-minute session on LiveJasmin costs three to four times what the same session costs on Chaturbate. Viewers who don't know this before entering a private show are making a spending decision blind.
All of these figures come from token rates, which means the real cost depends on how much you paid per token in your bundle. To check exactly what you're spending before you start, use our token calculators.
When a Private Show Is Worth It (And When It Isn't)
A private show is worth the cost in one specific situation: when you want undivided attention from a specific model.
You want to make a request that won't happen in a public room.
You want the model's responses directed at you, using your name, reacting to what you say.
You want to direct the session rather than watch someone else's.
In those cases, a private show is the only format that delivers what you're actually looking for, and the price is justified.
If you're curious about private shows, a good way to start is to buy a few tokens on a freemium site and try a 10 to 20 minute show at a reasonable price. Take your time to find a model you like and see if she's available for a private session. It's a low-commitment way to see if it's something you enjoy.

FAQ: Common Private Show Questions
Can the model see me during a private show?
Only if you activate cam2cam yourself. By default, the model cannot see you. Cam2cam is viewer-initiated, you turn on your camera; the model's camera is already on. No platform gives models access to your camera without your consent.
Are private shows recorded?
On some platforms, viewers can purchase a session recording for a fee before or during a private show. The model typically retains access to their own session. Some sites will give you a recording of the Private Show for free by default.
Who sets the per-minute rate, the platform or the model?
Models set their own rates within platform-defined floors and ceilings. The platform averages in our table are not the price you'll pay, they're the average across all models. Always check the rate displayed in the model's room before entering a private session.
Is there a minimum charge on premium sites?
Yes. Most models opt for a 10-minutes minimum duration for private shows, regardless of the rate. The duration and rate varies by model and platform settings. Don't forget to check the rates and the minimum duration before starting a show. You can also ask the model directly.
